Day 24: walking through mountains and rice fields in the valleys
I walked from Ichinose Bus Stop to temple T39 (Enkoji): 25 km (total: 506 km). The way went through mountains and valleys with farming activities. A nice scenery. The last 5-7 km I followed a busy road with many cars and no walking lanes for pedestrians. The day started sunny, but at about noon time, a lot of rain came down, so I got fairly wet. Altitude today was 250 m. Temperature at 23 degrees Celcius.

Yesterday I passed by the house of birth (today fully renovated in its original appearance) from John Manjiro (1827- 1898). He has an interesting and for Japanese important biography. John was a young fisher man, who - together with friends - got shipwrecked and lived on an uninhabited island for almost 5 months before an American whale fishing boat rescued them and brought them to Hawaii. John learned English, shipbuilding and navigation and returned to Japan after 10 years.
He played an instrumental role as a translator and interpreter when Japan and the US negotiated the opening of Japan for trade after Commodore Perry with his black ships threatened the country.

The ryokan hat a depressive atmosphere, but at the end it does not matter. I always look forward for the next day |
