Day 12: a rainy day in Monet‘s Garden in Kitagawa Village

Walking distance today: 25 km (total: 238 km). Temperature dropped below 20 degrees Celsius. Altitude mastered: 140 m.

I started the day by walking a last time through the historic streets of Kiragawa. Right from the start it was raining and it was going to get a lot more during the day. I guess more than 20 liters per sqm. came down.

The walk to Nahari was relatively boring and is nothing to remember.

The highlight of the day was my visit of Monet‘s Garden which was established in 2000 in the village of Kitagawa. Is intention was to capture the spirit of Monet’s beloved gardens in Giverny (France), which inspired him for many of his pictures.

The garden is impressive and despite the rain excited me a lot. Japanese are really the world champions in creating gardens and that already for centuries. The attached pictures however do not really convey the feeling the garden left on me.

In Japan a lot is done for disaster prevention. Here is one of the many tsunami escape decks.

My favorite picture from this rainy day
