Day 18: o-Henro pilgrims take a short cut by using a ferry boat

The day started with some light rain and a temperature slightly below 20 degrees Celsius, which is comfortable for walking. In order to get from Usa Town to Susaki you can choose among three different options. The shortest one is taking a ferry boat which reduces the daily walk from 27 km to about 18 km. This option was right for me and eight other o-Henro walkers. Actually the ferry boat was only filled with o-Henro pilgrims and no one else.

My morning started at temple 38, with a nice warm up through a steep incline on stone steeps. The attached picture does not fully convey how steep you have to walk up.

I have not posted a picture of one of the many car tunnels which can often not be avoided.  Some have protected pedestrian lanes, some don’t. This one we had to pass today leaves walkers unprotected. These tunnels can be up to 2 km long.

The Canadian is called Raimond, he is the one with whom I walked yesterday and had a joint udon noodle lunch. We have to pass an unprotected car tunnel.

This is how the sky looked today, after it was hot and sunny for a long time.

Yanagiya ryokan in Susaki is nice. A spacious room with a private toilet and an armchair (barely visible at the left side of the picture) for me to relax.

Walking distance today was 18 km (total now at 371 km). Altitude was 110 m.
